![]() ![]() LAIKA has applied technical innovations to this time-honored art form, bringing stop-motion animation into the digital age. The unforgettable characters and stories featured in LAIKA’s films are made using stop-motion animation, with hand-crafted techniques that date from the emergence of cinema. The interactive animation section of the Museum’s core exhibition Behind the Screen will be reimagined with a special focus on the seminal and wildly popular work of LAIKA, the animation studio that created Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), and Missing Link (2019). The series is set many years before the story depicted by The Dark Crystal, and presents a greatly expanded world with many additional characters. The ten-part Netflix series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance pits Gelfling heroes against the nefarious Skeksis, as they attempt to save their world. Highlights include the Hunter Skeksis, the General Skeksis, a Fizzgig, and the All-Maudra and Seladon Gelflings, as well as a series of detailed maquettes, created by Toby Froud, which were used as models for the characters. The exhibit features a selection of concept art, maquettes, puppets, and behind-the-scenes images, tracing the collaboration between concept artist Brian Froud, who originated the world of Thra in The Dark Crystal, and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, which built the puppets for the series. The tour costs $5.00 per visitor (on top of admission ticket).Ĭreatures from the Land of Thra: Character Design for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance explores the process of designing the fantastical characters for the new Netflix series, a prequel to the 1982 film co-directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. On Saturdays at 1:00 p.m., join us for guided, family-oriented tours of The Jim Henson Exhibition!
